What Those Black Streaks on Your Roof Really Are

By Delta Softwash

Drive through almost any neighborhood in Mobile, Daphne, or Spanish Fort and you will spot roofs with dark streaks running down the shingles, usually starting near the ridge and fanning out toward the gutters. Most homeowners assume it is soot, dirt, or shingle wear. It is actually something alive, and understanding what it is changes how you should deal with it.

Meet Gloeocapsa Magma

Those black streaks are caused by a type of algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It travels through the air as spores and lands on roofs everywhere, but it thrives especially well in humid, warm climates like ours along the Gulf Coast. Once it takes hold on a shingle, it feeds on the limestone filler used in asphalt shingles and spreads gradually, leaving behind the dark, streaky staining you see from the ground.

Why It Loves Gulf Coast Roofs

Mobile Bay humidity keeps roofs damp for longer stretches throughout the year, giving algae plenty of time to establish and spread. Homes with more shade, like many older properties throughout Mobile and along tree-lined streets in Fairhope, tend to see streaking develop faster since shaded roof sections stay damp longer after rain. North-facing roof slopes, which get less direct sunlight to dry them out, are usually hit hardest.

Why It's More Than a Cosmetic Issue

Beyond making a roof look aged and neglected, that algae growth can actually shorten your roof's lifespan. As it spreads, it can hold moisture against the shingle surface and gradually degrade the granules that protect shingles from UV damage. Left unchecked for years, this can contribute to premature shingle wear, which means a roof replacement sooner than it should be needed.

It Can Also Affect Resale

A roof covered in black streaks reads as an old, poorly maintained roof to potential buyers, even if the shingles have plenty of life left. If you are getting ready to list a home anywhere in Mobile or Baldwin County, a roof soft wash is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost curb appeal before showings.

Why You Should Never Pressure Wash a Roof

This is worth repeating because it causes real damage every year. High-pressure washing on asphalt shingles strips away the protective granules, shortens the shingles' life dramatically, and can void a roofing manufacturer's warranty outright. Once those granules are gone, they do not come back, and the shingle underneath is exposed to UV damage it was never meant to handle directly.

Soft Washing Is the Correct Method

Roof soft washing uses a low-pressure application of an algaecide solution specifically formulated for asphalt shingles. It kills the algae at the root, breaks down the staining, and rinses away cleanly without ever putting pressure or force against the shingle surface. This is the method roofing manufacturers actually recommend for cleaning algae-stained shingles.

Keeping Streaks From Coming Back

  • Trim back tree limbs that shade the roof and keep it damp longer
  • Keep gutters clear so water drains properly instead of pooling near the roofline
  • Ask about zinc or copper strips along the ridge, which can slow algae regrowth over time
  • Schedule a roof soft wash every one to two years depending on shade and exposure
